When does your Whirlpool leak? That is your best clue.

A leak while filling often points to the hoses or water inlet valve. A leak while draining points to the drain hose, standpipe or pump. A leak during the spin on an older washer can mean a worn tub seal. Puddles in front of a front-load model often come from the rubber door boot. An appliance tech can confirm. We handle the appliance leak water damage.

The detergent problem

Can too much detergent make a Whirlpool leak?

Yes. High-efficiency (HE) washers use much less water than older machines. Too much soap, or regular non-HE detergent, makes a mountain of suds.

What happens

Suds fill the tub and push water out through vents, the door seal or the drain area. You may see foam on the floor and a puddle that seems to come from nowhere.

The easy fix

Use only HE detergent and follow the line in the cap, or less. Pods are measured for you.

But the floor is still wet

Even a small suds overflow soaks the floor under the washer, where you cannot reach it. Water sitting under laundry vinyl or hardwood leads to swelling and mold. We pull the washer, extract the water and dry the subfloor with drying equipment.

Upstairs laundry rooms

If your washer is upstairs, check the ceiling below for stains. Our ceiling water damage team can check and dry it.

Our cleanup

How we clean up after a Whirlpool washer leak

  1. Move the washer

We carefully pull the washer out to reach the water under and behind it.

  2. Extract water

Floors, carpet and pad nearby are extracted right away.

  3. Check walls and ceilings

Meters and thermal cameras check walls, baseboards and the ceiling below.

  4. Dry the structure

Air movers and dehumidifiers dry floor and walls to the dry goal.

  5. Clean and treat

Washer drain water is gray water, so we clean and treat affected areas.

Prevention

Stop your next Whirlpool washer leak

  • Replace rubber fill hoses with braided steel, about every five years.

  • Turn off the washer faucets when you leave on a trip.

  • Use HE detergent and measure carefully.

  • Keep the drain hose secured in the standpipe.

  • Wipe and dry the door boot on front-load models after use.

  • Put a washer pan and leak sensor under upstairs washers.

FAQs

Whirlpool washer leak questions

Why is my Whirlpool washer leaking from the bottom?

Common causes include a loose or cracked hose, a failing drain pump, a worn tub seal on older models, or suds overflowing from too much detergent. An appliance technician can find the exact part.

Why does my Whirlpool leak only while filling?

That usually points to the fill hoses or the water inlet valve at the back of the washer. Turn off the faucets until it is checked.

Can too much detergent cause a leak?

Yes, especially in HE washers. Extra suds can push water out of the machine. Use HE detergent and measure carefully.

Does Whirlpool make Maytag and KitchenAid?

Yes. Maytag, KitchenAid and Amana are Whirlpool Corporation brands, and they often share similar parts.

Is washer water dirty?

Water from the drain side of a washer is considered gray water. Affected areas should be cleaned and treated, and soaked carpet pad is usually replaced.

Do you fix washers?

No. We clean up and repair the water damage. An appliance repair company fixes the washer.
